Castiglione del Terziere<\/strong> was once part of the territories of the Este Princes<\/strong>, which, after the 1202<\/strong> came under the control of the Malaspina Princes<\/strong>. The houses of the village<\/strong> were already present in the early 14th century<\/strong> and contributed to the structure of castrum<\/strong>\u2014a fortified complex that protected the ancient fortilitium<\/strong>. This consisted of buildings from both the early and late Middle Ages<\/strong>, integrated with defensive walls<\/strong> from the 15th century<\/strong>, later restored by Lorenzo de\u2019 Medici, the Magnificent.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The broad and noble historical panorama<\/strong> , combined with a landscape of rare beauty<\/strong>, make Castiglione del Terziere<\/strong> a a unique place<\/strong>, rich in cultural and historical value<\/strong> . The current castle stands precisely on the site of the ancient fortilitium<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The roman road<\/strong>, in its valley route through the Vallescura<\/strong> (where the remains of an 18th-century brick factory<\/strong>, an example of industrial archaeology<\/strong>, can still be seen), would branch off to reach the fortified complex<\/strong> of Castiglione. The same was later true for the Via Romea or Francigena<\/strong>, which passed through the area to reach an important hospitale<\/strong>, a rest stop for travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the heart of castrum<\/strong> era il fortilitium<\/strong>, dating back to the 8th\u20139th centuries AD,<\/strong>which in the following centuries evolved first into Castle<\/strong>\u2014the residence of Imperial Vicar Castruccio Castracani<\/strong>\u2014and later into a representative palace<\/strong> of the Florentine Government<\/strong>, housing the Republican and later Medici Magistracy.<\/strong>During the Renaissance, Castiglione del Terziere<\/strong> was home to many magistrates, judges, and notaries<\/strong>, as it functioned as a Florentine enclave, isolated from the rest of Tuscany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Castruccio, control passed to Marquis Franceschino Malaspina<\/strong>of the Spino Fiorito branch<\/strong>, known as \"the Soldier<\/strong>\", who held prestigious positions such Captain of War of the Florentine Republic<\/strong>, Viscount of Luni<\/strong> and Podest\u00e0 of Milan<\/strong>. The Restoration of the Castle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

By the 1960s<\/strong>, both the castle and the village<\/strong> were in critical condition. The castle was little more than a ruin. Thanks to extensive structural consolidation<\/strong>, dismantling, and reconstruction work, carried out using scientific methods<\/strong> and with respect for architectural integrity<\/strong>, it was saved.<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was followed by an ideological and spiritual restoration<\/strong>, with the aim of reviving the castle's cultural soul<\/strong> .
